PROFILE

Born in Edinburgh. After university and training as a photographer, I embarked on a five-year hitch-hiking journey round the world, for the most part wearing a kilt, visiting and photographing sixty countries on six continents. This provided the foundations of a slide library which I've run since 1984, and launched a trilogy of travel books about my experiences and impressions.
Subsequent journeys include cycling 5000 miles behind the Iron Curtain shortly before it fell, making a winter sled dog traverse of Alaska to the Bering Sea, rowing a Highland birlinn through the Hebrides, a transatlantic yacht delivery and solo circumnavigations of Ireland and the Faroes. Since 1989 my wife Sheena and I have been based on the Isle of Skye.
