PROFILE

Born in Edinburgh. After university and training as a photographer, I embarked on a five-year hitch-hiking journey round the world, for the most part wearing a kilt, visiting and photographing sixty countries on six continents. This provided the foundations of a slide library which I've run since 1984, and launched a trilogy of travel books about my experiences and impressions.
Subsequent journeys include cycling 5000 miles behind the Iron Curtain shortly before it fell, making a winter sled dog traverse of Alaska to the Bering Sea, rowing a Highland birlinn through the Hebrides, two transatlantic yacht deliveries and solo circumnavigations of Ireland and the Faroes. After living on the Isle of Skye for many years, my wife, Sheena, and I are currently based in Aberdeenshire.
